Thank you from the Arwood Family: "We wanted to send a note of thanks for allowing us to come and participate in the Miss Ohio Pageant and for issuing us the certificate for Alex’s new hearing aid. It is so wonderful to see his world expanding and we couldn’t have done it without HIKE. Thank you!"

On September 18, 2005, five year old Lauren Matuszewski received a HIKE award at the Toledo home of her Grandma and Grandpa. Amanda, Jessica, Brittany and Addie (Ohio Job’s Daughters) shared who Job’s Daughters are and explained the HIKE Fund.

Lauren was presented a HIKE certificate, "Windy the Pooh" pin, a teddy bear and a teddy bear pin. Pictures were taken in the back yard.

About a month later, an update was received from Lauren’s Mom, Amy, to let us know how Lauren and her new "ears" are doing. She tells us that the new "ears" and the FM system has been a true blessing. Lauren’s speech has improved and become much clearer. Her teacher says that she is a totally different child in class. Before she was distracted or tuned out of class and wouldn’t answer questions. Now she is participating and listening and is more involved. They even use the FM system when she plays soccer. In fact her father tries to coach her from the sideline and the FM system is working so well that Lauren has told her daddy that she didn’t want him to talk to her from the sideline.

Lauren still has a long way to go to get her caught up in speech and communication in comparison to other children her age, but she is working really hard and is on her way. We cannot express how much we appreciate everything you have done for her. I know the Job’s Daughters work really hard to raise money to help Lauren and other children like her. Please let them know how much they have helped Lauren and how grateful we are. Thank you!!!

Wyoming April 28, 2006

On Friday, April 28th at a gathering of deaf and hard of hearing children from around the state, Ammon Bullinger of Burlington, Wyoming was presented with a check to purchase a palatometer, a piece of equipment that will help Ammon improve his speech.

Ammon is five years old and was born with a complete hearing loss in his right ear. With the help of a CROS hearing aid, Ammon is making great progress in speaking and listening but he needs a bit more help. The palatometer is a device connected to a computer that will show Ammon what the inside of his mouth should look like when he is making certain sounds. The visual stimulus will make it much easier for Ammon to know how to shape his mouth and where to put his tongue when talking.

The money was given to Ammon by the Wyoming Job's Daughters. Job's Daughters International is an organization for girls between the ages of ten and twenty. The organization strives to help girls grow into responsible adults. Their teachings focus on leadership, public speaking and kindness towards others. In 1985 Job's Daughters was the first youth organization in the world to develop and run its own philanthropic project. The Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment (HIKE) provides hearing devices and other technology to children with hearing loss.

Friday was an emotional day for all involved. Ammon's mom, Christine, was thankful for the support from the Job's Daughters. The girls in attendance, Miss Wyoming Job's Daughter Alicia Vonberg, and PGBHQ Jessica Blackman were excited to see the fruits of their labor. Also in attendance was Wyoming's Grand Guardian Maria Criswell. She regularly attends the state wide activities for the deaf and hard of hearing children and was very gratified to see the members of her organization learning first hand the difference they are capable of making in the lives of other Wyoming children.
