KANSAS

On January 4, 2004, Bethel #1 of Topeka, Kansas presented Hike awards to three young men, 10-year old Dustin Hull, and brothers Shane and Blake Winkenwader.  A beautiful ceremony was performed by Honored Queen Chelsea, Grand Bethel Honored Queen Danae, and State Hike Coordinator Lyle, PAGBG.  Due to the inclement weather the two state Daughter Hike Coordinators were unable to attend.  The IOJD and HIKE were explained to the families and guests.  The recipients and their families were escorted to the east to receive their certificates and checks.

On January 12, 2004 Bethel 43 in Fenton, Missouri was able to present a check to Chelsea Johnson, a nine year old girl from DeSoto, MO. The check will pay for digital programable hearing aids for Chelsea who has been hearing impaired since birth. Chelsea attends classes for the hearing impaired through the Jefferson County Special Services Co-op. Her audiologist, Elaine Burke contacted Mom Donna Goede through the school in search of a means to acquire new hearing aids for Chelsea. Ms Burke was also at the presentation along with the Grand Guardian, Toni Underwood, Associate Grand Guardian Ralph Schmitt, Miss MO Diane Lynch, and Eastern Regional HIKE Coordinator Daniella Brand. Chelsea's mother and twin sister Alex were also present. Chelsea thought the gift was the best birthday present ever, since she and her sister's 10th birthday was later that week. HIKE Coordinator Dr. Albert Howe made the necessary preparations and brought the check from the HIKE Board.

Bethel’s No. 2 and No. 22 held an open meeting at Highlands Lodge, Denver honoring other Masonic bodies.  Before the meeting the Colorado HIKE Choir performed a sign language version of two Christmas songs.  Nicholas Murray, age 4, and Sophie Thomas, age 2, and their families were then called to the East and presented HIKE checks and small stuffed dogs.

Nicholas has a moderate hearing loss as does his older brother, Tyler.  Tyler is a previous recipient of a HIKE award and his hearing aids have made a big difference.  He is now earning straight “A’s” in school.  Nicholas will start kindergarten next fall and his aids will help.

Sophie has a severe to profound hearing loss and the aids will help her learn to speak more clearly before she starts school.

Both mothers thanked the girls and told them how much they appreciated the help.

Submitted by Mike Givan, ABG, Bethel #3, PA IOJD
Visit our Bethel at http://www.GivanFamily.org/bethel3/

On November 22, 2003, The Grand Bethel of the Pennsylvania International Order of Job's Daughters held their Annual Fall Meeting, at the Patton Campus in Elizabethtown, PA. After the meeting the daughters gathered at the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown, PA for a 5 mile hike to raise money for HIKE This hike raised over $3,000 in just 2-1/2 hours. As an added bonus, Ashley Snyder, Miss Congeniality for 2003-2004 had a llama brought in so any one that wanted to, could have their picture taken with the llama for $3.00. This is just another example of one of the many unique methods used by Pennsylvania Jobie's to raise money for this worthy cause.
